Lessons from a view of the Cumberland Lake in Somerset, Kentucky

The South-Central Kentucky Chapter held its annual telethon and auction fundraiser the weekend of May 4th

A large group from the organization was traveling to the event, so instead of booking several rooms in a hotel, we decided to split a private home rental. It was more economical, likely more comfortable, and would make it easier for everyone to ride share and coordinate throughout the weekend.

The home was beautiful and comfortable with thoughtful hosts who had stocked all we needed for the weekend and then some. But the best feature of the house was the view over Cumberland Lake that branches from the Cumberland River.

After an amazing night at the telethon on Friday, we all spent a slow morning on the deck before the busy day of fundraising. We listened to some gentle rain that came and went and watched the occasional boat go down the river, under the bridge, and back to the marina. It was watching these boats and the ripples left behind in the river that caught my attention.

There was an obvious direction to the gentle flow of the river with tiny waves spanning from shore to shore. The water was moving, and the surface showed the signs of interruptions below the surface where the shore extended out and around the posts that support the bridge. But when a single boat went by, its wake changed everything. Moving slowly and steadily upriver, all alone, the wake spread out from the back of the boat so that long after the boat is out of view, the surface of the water is covered in ripples.

I couldn’t help but watch in awe at the lasting effect.

  • Each child brought into a home that will raise them in the knowledge and love of the Lord,
  • each new corporate sponsor,
  • each new member of the Future 500,
  • each donation and yard sale fundraiser,
  • each act of supporting a sponsoring business,
  • each prayer for the families, mothers, and children:

They are each a boat moving steadily across the lake.

The vastness of the impact may not be seen until the boat passes from view, but it is lasting, and it is undeniable.
