The Heritage of a Tree

As we look toward the generations ahead, we have the opportunity to carefully nurture what has been planted today so that others may one day enjoy its shade.

A large, majestic tree tells a story. The span and height of its trunk and the spread of its branches speak to the slow, steady passage of time without uttering a word. A tree is a symbol of strength and steadiness. It is a testament to the importance of strong roots. It models the cyclical nature of years. And it demonstrates how provision – like the shade, shelter, or fruit it gives – often exists because of the mindful planning of past generations.

Genesis 21:33 – “Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and called there on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God.”

Why did Abraham plant a tree? And why this type of tree? One belief is that Abraham’s choice to plant a tamarisk is because it is a tree known for its resilience and long lifespan. Therefore the choice is an act of faith in God to establish this nomad’s descendants in that promised land – quite literally putting down roots. Another thought is that Abraham describes God as everlasting in contrast with the reality that both he and this tree, however long they each may live, are temporal and God is eternal. Either way, the planting of this tree is also an act of blessing for those who will come after Abraham. He would likely never see it fully mature, but future generations would be able to enjoy its shade long after he was gone.

Are we planting and nurturing trees today for future generations like Abraham?

It’s my prayer that the kingdom work of this organization continues for many generations and that, like a mighty tree, anyone who comes to look at it can see the solid roots that have taken hold during these first 20 years. That they see strength and steadiness, tested by time and seasons. That they see provision that is possible because of the intentional and mindful planning of past generations. Those “past” generations are here now. We are the ones with the opportunity to nurture the growing tree that is Sacred Selections.

I would like to ask you to consider if you can join us in the work of watering this tree. Your prayers are always needed and deeply appreciated. Your support for adoptive families in their adoption and parenting journeys is invaluable. And as much as I always want the focus of this work to be about all the other things that are so much more valuable than money, your consistent financial support is essential.

If you are one of our partners with the Future 500, thank you. If not, I ask that you consider joining. This year, the Future 500 campaign has been slightly reshaped to create four levels of giving, making it possible for more people to join in this work through regular, ongoing support. This campaign is a partnership designed to provide for the needs of families today while planting and nurturing something that will serve families for generations to come.

When we plant a tree today, we do not expect to enjoy its full beauty tomorrow. Whether a tamarisk in the southern desert of Israel or a heritage oak in the central plains of the United States, the promise of a tree is a blessing for those who will come after us.

Abraham showed faith in the Everlasting God to keep His promises of descendants like the Sand and Stars. Let us also carefully cultivate and nurture this tree today so that, by God’s grace, many generations will continue to sit in its growing shade.
